11/13 (Wed.) 20:00-21:30
Zoom Live Talk
Commentary and Q&A from Nakba (and before) to the First Intifada
OKA Mari
Mari Oka, author of “What is Gaza – Urgent Lectures to Understand Palestine” and “What Junior High School Students Want to Know about Palestine” and a long-time researcher on West Asia (aka the Middle East), especially women writers, is currently inundated with requests to speak at the event. She is a professor at Waseda University, but this semester she is also teaching a course on Palestine at the University of Tokyo. Ms. Oka will be our guest for the third and fourth installments of the online UPAF, and she will give us a brief history of Palestine. If you have not seen the film but would like to know more about the history of Palestine, you are of course welcome to join us! If you have not seen the film but would like to know more about the history of Palestine, you are of course welcome to join us. And we are looking forward to seeing what kind of place we will arrive at when we listen to Oka-san’s commentary while watching the 7 Palestinian films delivered and screened at the 10th UPAF, since we are one of those who have not experienced it yet.
Listening to this issue will deepen your understanding of Lyd, Salt of This Sea (Nakba, 1948), The Road I Saw (When I Saw You) (Third Middle East War, 1967), and The Intifada of the Dairy Cows (First Intifada, 1987-93) on a different level.
*We would like to pay Ms. Oka for his speaking fee, and since a lot of money is being spent on screening rights fees and distribution platform costs, we will charge a fee in the hope that we will not lose money. We also plan to make archived streaming available until mid-January next year, when the 10th UPAF’s in-person screening in Okayama will be completed. This will be made available for purchase from the same Teket page within 2-3 days after the talk.
*Because of the high cost of using Zoom for a webinar, we will do it in a meeting format. We will have a speaker view, so only Oka-san and UPAF staff will be in large view. The camera and microphone will be turned off by default, but if you do not want your name to appear, please change it beforehand. Please note that we will be recording the event for archival distribution. We will hide those who have their cameras turned off for the recording. Attendance at the talk is strongly recommended for those who wish to meet Oka-san and enjoy the live experience.
